311: The Blue Bottle

You empty the blue bottle
in the middle of the night.
The city lights rush past
painting streaks of light
in an otherwise dismal heart.
Not drunk enough to forget,
you twirl the bottle, let it spin —
he, she, they, you, who?
Laughter drifts by, a gentle "come home".
You scrawl a note
on the back of a napkin
and jam it into the bottle. Cork it.
Throw the pen.
Throw the bottle.
Watch it sink
into the night.
