About

The Eudaemonia Records started as most good things do: with friends, tea, and biscuits. During the academic year 2019-20, we were six students at the University of York (UK) who met up each week to discuss texts we had written or wanted to write, usually over each our cup of Yorkshire Tea and bourbon biscuits to soak. When COVID-19 struck, three of us decided to start an online platform to share our experiences of quarantine, isolation, and lockdown—not only with each other, but with the world. This was The Quarantine Journal, the precursor to Eudaemonia.

As The Quarantine Journal progressed, our content became more defined in its sentiment. It was no longer solely about our experiences during COVID-19, but about our friendships, loves, wonders, and joys. We decided that we could develop our concept further.

During the developmental period, one of our editors came across the word 'eudaemonia' (pronounced: yoo-di-moh-nee-uh). Originally Greek ('eudaimonía'), it suggests happiness and well-being, and the happiness resulting from active decisions. This is following the Aristotelean tradition, and perfectly captured what our mission had become: to inspire ourselves and our readers to actively seek out happiness and well-being.

Starting in August 2020, we therefore became the Eudaemonia Records. Inspired by the Ancient Greek traditions, we decided to focus on poetry. While we invite readers and writers to submit all forms of poetry (see our Submission Guidelines), we are especially interested in promoting prose poetry and helping new voices be heard.

As a platform, we are still growing, but we look forward to every minute of it, and hope that you will be there to enjoy it with us. Happy reading!

"I started Eudaemonia to find new writers. As a writer, reader, and critic, I love modern children's literature, medieval travel writing, and legends, and my poetry meditates on gender presentation and socio-political issues. My favourite books include J. R. R. Tolkien's The Lord of the Rings and Diana Wynne Jones's Howl's Moving Castle."

Eudaemonia has been a wonderful avenue through which to pursue creative writing in my spare time. I am interested in Early modern literature, particularly Jacobean theatre. My favourite play right now is A Midsummer Night’s Dream, and my favourite novel is The Picture of Dorian Grey.”

"I haven't written anything for Eudaemonia, but I have enjoyed reading it. I love reading anything slightly strange, especially if it contains magical elements, and my favourite genre of literature is definitely fantasy. My favourite authors fall within this genre, and, like J. R. R. Tolkien, tend to have poetry embedded in their works."
