307: Does it Make a Difference?

Sometimes I wonder
what is a more worthy topic of poetry:
hurled obscenities
and allusive (elusive) remarks
about ideologies and doctrines
that limit our lives?
Or gentle lines about love and life
that fade into the afternoon sun?
Should we write to make our voices loud
or to promise that there is still some joy?
Should we prove that the pen is mightier still
or nurture what hope is still left?
Does it make a difference?
Is love and light radical
in a world where we've been taught to fight
loudly and brutally for what we believe in?
How far will kindness go
among cutting words and guns?
Who will hear our silence,
accusing,
after a life, a light, a love, a joy
has been lost
to iron speeches and lies?
When did honesty and warmth
become revolutionary?
