306: A Meditative Practice

I sit at the kitchen table and write.
A square of morning light
falls on me.
I watch the shadow of my pen
wander across the page
like a foreign object not guided
by the muscles in my hand and arm,
the electric impulses in my brain.
Writing is a meditative practice.
A grounding.
I emphasise the silence
between my ears and headphones
and the beat of the music
humming in my veins,
echoing in my chest
like the shadow of a faded thrill.
The warmth demands presence.
The paper demands care.
The music demands silence.
I write you into the silence
with all the attention of a distant lover
who tries to keep your image
in the locket of their mind.
