She builds a fence,
he knocks it down.
She builds another,
he knocks it down
too.
She builds a wall,
he digs beneath.
She moves away,
his voice follows in her head.
Another says, "I won't push you
to open up. All I ask
is that you be you."
She looks at her broken fences
and cries.
The words give her courage
to build another.
One of these days,
the lesson will be learned.
