277: Sailing in Flames

I dreamed that we built a boat in the fire
and replaced the charred wood
each time it burned through.
We were trying to build a vessel,
sea-worthy and strong.
It wouldn't sink (we wanted to mend it)
but it was hard work
in a world where only we believed.
Sometimes
I wanted to put the tools down,
give in to doubt,
abandon the boat,
and let it go up in flames.
Maybe somebody
somewhere
would find comfort in the bonfire,
while we wept for what we couldn't repair.
But I wake up and look at you,
a world away through a screen of thoughts and dreams,
and offer you my arms until you come a little closer — until
you kiss me and put your head on my shoulder
and I hold you tight because the tools
are too important to be set down.
