271: Slippery Dreams

To walk the shelf is a precarious affair
when droplets of the ocean water spray
your feet and calves with each wave
that shakes the cliff.
You wanted to make it to the fort
perched on the islet beyond the cliff
before the tide rolled in,
but you delayed. You played
in the sand and skipped stones
that sank on the second hit.
Then the waves washed in.
The rock crumbles beneath your feet.
You may slip.
You have yet to make it to the fort.
