269: Fear of Heights

This is an admission:
I have no fear of heights.
Standing on a peak
does not make my head swivel
or my knees tremble.
Standing on a castle wall
does not make me feel
like I will plunge.
Like any cautious person
I stay away from the edge.
But no overwhelming fear
mars the marvel of the view.
Once I am up there,
I have no fear.
It is the process that is frightening.
The slow steps towards the top
as winds shake the construction,
metal and wood bending and swaying,
threatening to shake me off.
The slow descent, the construction
still shaking, and the ground
a long fall off.
I have no fear of heights.
But I am terrified of falling.
