I know that you will come:
dressed in flickering white
or flowering red and blue,
your face will arrive before me
to remind me of the dead.
The drafts that I discarded
before their time was due,
the people I've forgotten,
like colours out of view.
We stand a while in silence,
knowing ourselves in the dark.
Our hands trace the patterns
of memories written in chalk,
then we walk away with kindness
to complete our tangled arcs.
I know that I'll find you,
one day we'll meet again;
we carry each other's candles,
nurturing till the end.
