243: Let Us Take Our Time

We do everything quickly.
We walk quickly, eat quickly,
talk quickly, type quickly,
fall asleep and wake up
quickly.
What happened
to slow mornings
and long evenings?
What happened
to watching
the sunlight scatter
across the bedroom wall?
What happened
to watching
the stars rotate
while the moon
wanes and waxes?
Guilt washes over me
when I take my time.
When I refuse to rush.
But what does rush accomplish?
It is a waterfall of time
slipping by, impossible to grasp.
Time eludes us
somewhere up ahead
or far behind, crashing
past us as we crash with it.
So let us watch the sunlight play.
Let us listen
to the gentle shiver of stars
that might have died
lightyears away.
Let us cherish this here now,
before it burns around us.
