198: So Close Yet so Far

So then we hugged. But then, as I felt their arms wrapping around me, pulling me into their chest, it became an embrace. I found myself pulling them closer in turn. It felt so familiar, too familiar, jolting my muscle memory into action, flicking the switch to remind me how hugs could feel — safe, warm ... held. I was part of the circuit, connected, giving something. Just as the reciprocality of the thing was beginning to sink in, they let go, pulling away and stepping back, outside the threshold of my doorway. So close, yet so far.
